Loreto Loreto, a dusty little village, described by Steinbeck in the “Log from the Sea of Cortes," as “a dream hangs over the whole region, a brooding kind of hallucination." This author was transfixed by the grandeur of the Baja California penninsula, as you too will be.
History can be explored at the Mision de Nuestra Senora de Loreto in the heart of town. Next door in the old friary, the Museo de Los Misiones, which chronicles the European descent upon California when the Spanish ruled.
In Loreto, people are of the crafts that stock the shelves, fry the fillet of the day in local restaurants, and take anglers out in search of marlin, snapper, cabrilla, tuna, sailfish, and grouper. Whale watching is from December to April.
Loreto, the oldest town in Baja California Sur, is surrounded by the incomparable scenery of the la Giganta mountain range, the desert and the Sea of Cortez.
