Zoo Montana, consisting of 70 some acres of beautiful grounds on Shiloh Road, west of Billings, Montana, is the only zoo within a 500-mile radius. From its conception in 1981, it was decided that the zoo would be a world-class zoological garden with quality habitats for the animals in natural settings. The wildlife are separated from human visitors by expertly arranged ravines, cliffs and other natural type barriers. The wildlife areas include habitats for: Siberian tigers, river otter, the rare Sika deer, waterfowl, timber wolf, bald eagle, great horned owl, red panda, bighorn sheep, prairie dog, wolverine, and Guenon monkeys. Plans are underway for adding more such habitats for additional animals. There is also a Sensory Garden housing an acre of a large variety of native and exotic plants for all the senses of sight, sound, smell and touch to experience. The Homestead Exhibit includes an historic homestead house and barn with the Children's Interactive Center allowing hands-on experiences for children with domestic animals.
The zoo is not large by metropolitan standards, but it is quite interesting with its gardens and habitat arrangements. The zoo closes for the winters. A food vendor is on site in the summers. Most of the zoo is handicapped (wheelchair) accessible.
