In 1854, Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant that set aside Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias in California as the first state park. Since then it has grown to additional areas and Sequoia Groves and became a National Park. From every vantage point in Yosemite, there are breathtaking mountains, waterfalls, meadows and forests. Some of the park’s famous landmarks include Half Dome, Sentinel Rock, and El Capitan, which is one of the best places to observe Rock Climbers from around the world that have come to challenge their abilities. Car Entrance to the inner part of Yosemite Valley is restricted -- shuttle service is available. Tioga Road across the Northern part of the park and Glacier Point Road South of the Valley (both closed in Winters) are more remote, less crowded and also very scenic. The rest of the park is open year-round.
The park's main entrance is located approximately 5 hours East of the San Francisco area and the East entrance of Tioga Road is approximately 3 hours South of the Lake Tahoe area. Activities: Hiking, Bicycle Trails, Horse Trails, Climbing, Fishing, Rafting, Swimming, Boating, Ice Skating, Downhill Skiing, Cross Country Skiing and Photography.
