Hotel Reservations near WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME
The first thing that you will notice as you visit the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, in Knoxville, Tennessee, is the giant basketball on top of a glass staircase that looks like a basketball net. This ball is identical in detail to a regulation basketball, except it weighs about 20,000 pounds and has over 96,000 “nubs” covering it. At the building entrance you'll see another giant ball, this one made out of bricks with names engraved on them. It's flat, embedded in the ground, and makes up the walkway into the museum. Once inside the Hall, you'll see a sculpture called “Honor the Past, Celebrate the Present, Promote the Future”. This sculpture contains three players, one from the past, another from the present, and the third of a young girl dribbling a basketball, represents the future to this sport. Once you enter the hall, you can watch a film called “Hoopful of Hope” which highlights the history of women’s basketball. Some of the history points are that women haven’t always played the five-player full court game, or that there used to be a limit on the number of times that you could dribble the ball, or that you used to have to pull a chain for the ball to go through the basket. There are displays throughout the building with all kinds of unique memorabilia, from Olympic uniforms to WNBA gear, from rule books and balls to trophies and medals, and from the rafters hang more than 100 jerseys representing high school or collegiate All-Americans. The “Winners’ Wall” recognizes championship teams all the way from grassroots age group organizations to the Olympics. Finally, as you leave, don’t miss the “Big Finish Theater”, which shows a fast-paced, action-packed video that is sure to get you pumped up. The museum is open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.
