The town of Winchester, Virginia, on the northern edge of the Shenandoah Valley, is surrounded by several Civil War battle sites. The names of these include the 1st Kernstown Battle at Rose Hill, the 1st & 2nd Kernstown Battle at Pritchard Farm, 1st Winchester Battle at Camp Hill and Bowers Hill, 2nd Winchester Battle at Stephenson's Depot, 3rd Winchester Battle at Redbud Run and Fort Collier, and the Cool Spring Battle at Holy Cross Abbey. The town changed hands over 70 times throughout the course of the war. Graffiti from captured and hospitalized soldiers is still visible in the 18th century courthouse in the town’s main square. Stone walls and cemetaries that provided cover for soldiers still stand today. Some of the more well-known generals, from both sides that passed through, include Stonewall Jackson, Jubal Early, George Custer, Philip Sheridan, Richard Ewell, Robert Milroy, Joseph Kershaw, George Crook, Horatio Wright, John Breckinridge, and Rutherford Hayes.
Things to see: the Stonewall Jackson Headquarters Museum, Old County Court House Civil War Museum, Civil War Orientation Center, Glen Burnie Historic House and Gardens, the National Cemetary and historic downtown, as well as some of the actual surrounding battle sites. Also, from over a century earlier, are George Washington's Office Museum and Abram's Delight Museum (oldest home in Winchester).
