After wintering at Fort Mandan from 1804-1805, the expedition again headed up river. They reached the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers southwest Williston, North Dakota in April, 1805, and examined the area they called "this long wished for spot." On the return journey in 1806 Lewis and Clark had split up and led divisions of the Corps on separate explorations of the Missouri and Yellowstone. They were to meet and rejoin at the confluence of the two rivers, but Clark arrived first then moved downriver to escape the mosquitoes before Lewis arrived. While hunting east of modern-day Williston, ND in 1806, Lewis was accidentally shot in the buttocks by the near-sighted Pierre Cruzatte, who apparently mistook his commanding officer for an elk. Lewis spent much of the next few weeks traveling in a canoe, on his stomach.
The Fort Union Trading Post was later established by John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company in 1828, near the junction of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers. In it's heyday, the post was a busy place and employed up to 100 people. It became the headquarters for trading buffalo hides and other furs with the Assiniboine, Blackfeet, Crow, Cree, Hidatsa, and Ojibway Tribes. A vital frontier plains military post, Fort Buford was later built close by here in 1866, and became a major supply depot for military field operations.
