Here's a different kind of zoo experience. In Southern California, in the Angeles National Forest above the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles, at 14831 Little Tujunga Canyon Road, 5 miles up Little Tujunga Canyon road from the 210 Freeway is the Wildlife WayStation. This is a national, non-profit, 160-acre fully licensed, holding, rehabilitation, medical and problem-solving refuge for wild and exotic animals from around the world. At least 1,100 plus animals are currently housed at the facility. At least 4,500 animals annually make their way through the Waystation. It is home to lions, tigers, leopards, mountain lions, jaguars, bobcats, black bears, brown bears, deer, coyotes, wolves, primates, raccoons, birds, snakes, alligators, turtles, and lots more. Many of the animals end up being placed in reputable zoos or animal parks. Some make the facility their permanent home.
While the Waystation is not open to the general public, members and prospective members are invited to tour the Waystation. The Wildlife Waystation tour dates are the first and third Sundays of each month. Reservations are required. Times vary for winter and summer, call ahead at (818) 899-5201. Tours are free to members, a one-day membership can also be purchased for a small donation.
