Just north of Springfield, the Volleyball Hall of Fame is located in Heritage State Park, Holyoke, Massachusetts, known as the "Birthplace of Volleyball".
In 1895, William G. Morgan, a YMCA instructor in Holyoke, Mass., wanted to create a game with less physical contact and tried blending various parts of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball into his idea of a new game. He created the game of Volleyball, which at that time was called "Mintonette". Today, you can learn the history behind the game at the Volleyball Hall of Fame. The information and displays will guide you from the birth of an idea to Olympic Gold. Some of the exhibits include the wall of fame, a video display and a half model court. See how the game has become a popular pick-up sport for all, and has advanced from the original mintonette to the fast action volleyball competition of today.
