During the first wave of Japanese attacks on December 7, 1941, the Battleship USS Arizona suffered from a direct hit to its deck from a high altitude bomber. It only took nine minutes for the massive ship to sink, becoming the final resting place for 1,177 brave crewmen who lost their lives and who are still entombed within the Arizona today.
The USS Arizona Memorial grew out of a wartime desire to establish some sort of memorial to honor everyone who perished during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Dedicated in 1962, the architect Alfred Preis described the design of the Memorial as, "Wherein the structure sags in the center but stands strong and vigorous at the ends, expresses initial defeat and ultimate victory. The overall effect is one of serenity. Overtones of sadness have been omitted to permit the individual to contemplate his own personal responses...his innermost feelings."
The USS Arizona is located at Pearl Harbor, Northwest of Honolulu on Hawaii's main island, Oahu.
Activities: Interpretive Program, Tours to the Memorial by Boat, reservations recommended.
