Known as "America's most complete Zoo" and attracting a million visitors a year, the Toledo Zoo, 4 miles south of downtown Toledo, Ohio, is a local treasure and source of pride for the whole community. The Toledo Zoo is nationally recognized as one of the most comprehensive zoological institutions in the nation, as well as a top tourist attraction. The zoo has a world famous, and first of its kind in the zoo world, "Hippoquarium", which is also part of a stunning re-creation of an African Savanna. Other exhibits include the Kingdom of the Apes, a Primate Forest, aquarium, plus exhibits for Siberian tigers, Asian sloth bears, and African wild dogs, as well as a renovated aviary placing major emphasis on conservation. There's also the Arctic Encounter added in 2000, featuring polar bears and seals that visitors can view underwater. The Children's Zoo, the "Barnyard of the Zoo" has sheep, goats, alpacas, pigs, chickens, owls, etc.
The Zoo is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Kid's wagons, strollers, scooters and wheelchair rentals are available.
