The countryside around Fredericksburg, VA witnessed numerous battles: Chancellorsville, Ox Ford, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and others. The Battle of Fredericksburg in Dec of 1862, resulted in 5,300 casualties for the South and 12,600 for the North. It was a victory of sorts for the South and led to the Battle of Chancellorsville in May, 1863. One year after Chancellorsville, the month of May saw two more consecutive battles. On May 5 & 6, in an area of narrow roads, overgrown fields and old homesteads, shrouded amid smoke and fire, and among muddy trenches, was the Wilderness Battle. This was the beginning of General Grant's campaign to annihilate Lee's army by sheer force of numbers. This battle led to the Battle of Spotsylvania, a 12-day attack by Grant on Lee's entrenched army resulting in the combined loss of over 27,000 men.
