In 1783, the first governor in the new United States to issue a state order for celebrating Independence Day on the Fourth of July was Alexander Martin of North Carolina. For over 200 years Southport, North Carolina has proudly hosted its 4th of July Celebration - grown from colonial times when ships in the harbor shot their cannons, to today's festival to which 40-50,000 people come each year and commemorate the spirit of Old Glory. There's a wide range of activities for all ages, including a parade, arts and crafts, food, a Naturalization Ceremony, children's entertainment, street dances, live bands on the waterfront, sailboat races and of course a spectacular night-time fireworks display over the harbor. The festivities begin several days prior to July 4, with the biggest events happening July 2, 3, and of course, most on the 4th.
The Southport area also has a lot to offer besides the annual July 4th celebration. There are beaches, water sports, old lighthouses, shopping, dining, golf, fishing, museums, and historic sites.
