There are a variety of whales to view, with trips from here, as well as from Montauk, another 30 miles further out to the tip of Long Island. Fin whales are referred to as the greyhounds of the sea, because of their speed and muscles. They are found in March. Humpback whales have coloring on the back of their fluke, which can be used for identification. Humpbacks can be found June through September. The rarer Northern Right whales population is less than 300 and has not recovered since 1938 when laws no longer allowed whale hunting. They can be found in the Summer. Minke whales are the smaller of the toothless whales and are still being hunted in Norway and Japan. They can also be found here in the Summer.

The area is also historic, has a number of lighthouses, and is known for the nearby wine country.
