Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park are masterpieces created by nature. Although created by separate acts of Congress, they share miles of boundary and are managed as one park. An unspoiled alpine realm, with high-country lakes and mountain streams, snowfields, and scores of peaks that top 13,000 feet; the park is home to Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the contiguous 48 states and the world’s largest trees.
In volume of total wood, the giant sequoia stands alone as the largest living thing on Earth. At least one tree species lives longer, one has a greater diameter, three grow tall, but none is larger. Sequoias grow naturally only on the west slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Located in Central California about 1 hour East of Fresno, State Route 180; or State Route 198 East of Visalia. Some roads (including Kings Canyon) in the park close in the Winter, others may be icy, chains may be required. Activities: Nature Walks, Hiking, Horse Trails, Bicycle Trails, Fishing, Downhill Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, and Snow Shoeing.
