Seattle, Washingtion was named for a local Indian chief, but came late in American History. In 1792, British explorer, George Vancouver, anchored nearby and sent a lieutenant, Peter Puget, to survey the region. Both have given their names to the area: Vancouver Island and Puget Sound. The United States later was granted full recognition of the territory by England. In the 1840's the U.S. Navy surveyed and began charting the Puget Sound. American's did not seriously began to settle Seattle until the 1850's when immigrants came North after completing a western journey on the Oregon Trail. Settlement was fairly rapid with the establishment of mills, roads, schools, churches, and Post Office. Seattle had its newspaper in 1863, telegraph in 1864, railroad in 1872, telephone in 1878, cable cars in 1887, and automobile in 1900. Growth continued rapidly after that - in 1880 there were 3,000 people and by 1910 there were 230,000. The 'Great Fire' in June, 1889, burned the wood constructed business district and destroyed 30 city blocks, after which brick became the preferred construction material. Additional roads and rails were completed, such as the Great Northern Railway in 1893. Gold was discovered in the Klondike in 1896, making Seattle the last major stop and supply point on the way to the gold fields. In 1916 Boeing produced its first plane and in 1917 a ship canal opened, linking the Puget Sound with the Pacific Ocean. World Wars I and II created industries such as Boeing.
In recent years, Seattle hosted a World's Fair in 1962 with the 600 foot high famous landmark, the Space Needle. It has an observation deck and restaurant with views of Mount Ranier, Puget Sound and the city. Pioneer Square is a vibrant 20-block restored area of shops, restaurants, and nightlife. The Pike Place Market is a restored food market area with markets, shops, and fun restaurants. Activities: Visit Pioneer Square, Pike Place Market, the Space Needle, Seattle Aquarium, Arboretum, Chinatown, nearby wineries, and various museums. There are tours by land and water are available. You can also visit nearby National Parks: Mount Ranier, North Cascades, and Olympic.
