At the world famous San Diego Zoo, on Zoo Drive in Balboa Park, just north of downtown San Diego, California, you'll see some of the world’s rarest wildlife including the ever popular giant pandas and koalas. The San Diego Zoo's 4,000 animals representing 800 species include all the regulars: lions, tigers, bears, elephants, giraffes, gorillas, orangutans, zebras, and a lot more. Most of the Zoo's inhabitants live in habitat enclosures which resemble the animals' natural homes in the wild. Habitats include the Ituri Forest, an African rain forest where you encounter forest buffalos, hippos, otters, okapis, colorful birds and acrobatic monkeys; Polar Bear Plunge; Tiger River; Gorilla Tropics; and Sun Bear Forest; and the Panda Research Station; Bonobos chimps; and bird aviaries. The 100-acre Zoo also has a lush botanical garden, one of the best in the world, with a plant collection of over 6,500 species. Walk, utilize the express bus within the zoo, or take a shortcut over the treetops to the other end of the Zoo for spectacular views of the zoo and surrounding Balboa Park.
San Diego's ideal climate makes it possible for most of the Zoo’s animals to live outdoors year-round and for visitors to have a pleasant visit no matter what the season. The Zoo is open all year and is handicapped accessible. There are 5 cafes/restaurants and half a dozen gift shops.
