Santa Fe is rich in history and has a strong Spanish heritage along with pueblo Indian and white western frontier influence. It was the seat of power for the Spanish Empire located north of the Rio Grande River, and it became the capital city of the new territory and U.S. state of New Mexico. Santa Fe is the oldest capital city in North America and the oldest European community west of the Mississippi River. Today, the city is well-known for its famous old plaza and its artsy flavor and culture with many galleries, studios, museums, and shops.
