Off the coast of Southern California is Santa Catalina Island, the "Island of Romance" as the old song goes, an island that looks a lot like California did 200 years ago - cactus, trees, sage, secluded coves surrounded by ocean with abundant sea life. Years ago a ban on cars was instituted and a limit set on the number of existing cars allowed. In the port city of Avalon, where the primary mode of transportation for locals is by foot or golf cart, there are plenty of accommodations, restaurants, bars, shopping and activities.
In 1930, Philip K. Wrigley (of chewing gum fame) built a large home here where he bred Arabian horses. In 1924, fourteen bison were brought to the Island for a movie and left - today a managed herd of 200 lives on the Island. General George Patton spent summers here as a youngster. Marilyn Monroe lived here for over a year. The Casino Ballroom (not really a casino) used to host big bands for folks, many of whom were celebrities from the mainland. The Chicago Cubs trained here from 1921 to 1951. Many famous people from all walks of life have spent some amount of time on the island.
There are escorted tours available of Avalon and the island, boat tours (including underwater), a small beach, fishing, and relaxing. Avalon is accessed by Catalina Express Ferry Boat from San Pedro or Long Beach; or the Catalina Flyer Ferry from Newport Beach. The island's other little town of Two Harbors is reached by boat from Avalon. There is also Island Express Helicopter from Long Beach or San Pedro to the island's small airport.
