After passing over the Continental Divide, the expedition left the horses that they had acquired from the Shoshoni Indians, with the Nez Perce Indians, and built new dugouts for a water route they were hopeful would connect them to the Columbia River to the West Coast. They eventually reached their destination by way of the Salmon, Clearwater, Snake and Columbia Rivers, and some portages. It was near Salmon, Idaho while scouting the potential river route, that the Indians, who had been watching them, approached their camp and led them down the Salmon River to show them a set of rapids that at this time of year would have been castastrophic to the party and their wooden canoes. The expedition wisely chose to bypass these rapids. Today, with modern rubber rafts and a bit later in the season, this is a favorite rafting spot on the Salmon River. Also near here in August, 1805, one of the Shoshoni woman helpers gave birth to a baby. There is also a new Sacajawea Interpretive Cultural & Education Center near Salmon, ID.
