The Saint Louis Zoo about 15 minutes west of the Arch in Saint Louis, Missouri, has been acclaimed as one of the top zoos in America. The zoo got its start from the popular 1904 World's Fair Bird Cage and Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The big cage was left over after the fair and provided the incentive to build a world-class zoo. Animals such as bears, 5-6 ton elephants, tall giraffes, storks, antelope, emus, swift gazelle, rhinoceros, 3 1/2 to 4 ton hippopotamus, giant anteater, laughing hyena, speedy cheetah, colorful butterflies, slimy snakes, comical monkeys, talented sea lions, many birds, gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and lots more, all located thoughout numerous habitats such as River's Edge, The Wild, Red Rocks, Insectarium, and Historic Hill. The Penguin & Puffin Coast habitat and exhibit is new for 2003. The Children's Zoo has a variety of animal shows and activities, and even a unique feature of zooming down a slide, through an acrylic see-through chute, right through the otter pool with river otters swimming about.
There are food service facilities such as the Painted Giraffe Cafe and Lakeside Cafe, plus gift shops. There's also the little ZooLine Railroad (seasonal). The zoo is handicapped accessible with stroller and wheelchair rentals and is open year-round except Christmas Day and New Years Day.
