The Mardi Gras came up the Mississippi River to Saint Louis, Missouri and has become a big celebration here. Mardi Gras is "Fat Tuesday", the day before Ash Wednesday, 47 days before Easter (the 40 days and 7 Sundays of Lent). St. Louis celebrates Mardi Gras the last two weekends prior to Fat Tuesday.
The St. Louis Mardi Gras big Grand Parade rolls from Downtown St. Louis to the Historic Soulard Neighborhood on the Saturday, March 5, 2011, before Fat Tuesday. There is also a Pet Parade with 5,000 animals (many with costumes) attracting 75,000 spectators on the Sunday prior to the Grand Parade. There are other activities this weekend on Sat. and Sun., such as a wine tasting and art show, music, food, and local brews.
The 'Taste of Soulard' gives people the opportunity to sample the great dining options available in the Soulard Neighborhood. More than 20 local restaurants offer some of their fantastic Cajun and Creole specialties such as Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya, Cajun Meat Pies, Oyster Poor Boys and Red Beans & Rice, or deserts such as Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce, as well as speciality drinks. The restaurants and bars are, of course, also open the Saturday before Fat Tuesday.
