Opening in 1995, the new Rock and Roll Hall of Fame building is located on the Northcoast Harbor of Cleveland, Ohio, alongside the Great Lakes Science Center. It contains 150,000 square feet of floor space on seven levels and hosts more than four million visitors each year. The term "Rock & Roll" was originated by Cleveland DJ Alan Freed in the early 1950's. Exhibits are changed frequently and some items are only on display temporarily. Some items have been purchased by the Museum, nearly all of the items in the collection have been loaned or donated. The permanent collection spans musical instruments, music scores, handwritten lyrics, recordings and equipment; stage clothes and stage props; childhood memorabilia such as tap shoes, report cards and varsity letters. Some of the first inductees into the Hall of Fame in 1986 were Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley and Little Richard. In 2002, it was Isaac Hayes, Brenda Lee, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Gene Pitney, The Ramones, Talking Heads and Chet Atkins.
Take a break from exploring and stop at the museum store for a light lunch and shop for souvenirs like official Museum merchandise, books, and CD’s. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Elevators serve all levels and there is a limited supply of wheelchairs and strollers.
