To win the Triple Crown, a horse must compete in three long races, at three different tracks, in three different states in a span of five weeks. The second race (after the Kentucky Derby) is the Preakness Stakes held at Pimlico Race Track, in Baltimore, Maryland. Pimlico opened in 1870, making it the second oldest track behind Saratoga (1864). The Preakness race is held 2 weeks after the Derby (2009 race is on May 15), with over 100,000 people attending to witness the 1 3/16 mile race with a 1 million dollar purse and contenders pursuing the Triple Crown. Only eleven horses have won the elusive Triple Crown, some of those famous names are: Affirmed, Seattle Slew, Secretariat, Citation, Assault. Most of the spectators gather in the infield to party and watch what they can see from there.
The third race in the Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes.
