Northeast of Pocatello, ID the Hudson's Bay Company had established one of its first permanent settlements at Fort Hall in 1834. Fort Hall later became a supply point for immigrants traveling the Oregon Trail. About an hour drive east of Pocatella is Soda Springs where natural bubbling pools of carbonated water, caused by ancient volcanic activity, were an attraction. Indians, fur traders and trappers visited the springs even before the Oregon Trail days. Soda Springs was located on a shortcut to Fort Hall. Emigrants used the pools of water for medicinal and bathing purposes. Travelers and animals became sick if they drank too much of the alkali water from the springs.
Pocatello later became an important transportation hub with the discovery of gold, the railroad, and agricultural development. While here, visit Bannock County Historical Museum, Fort Hall replica and Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Museum.
