The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is located about five miles east of downtown Pittsburgh, PA on 77 acres that provide a home to 4,000+ animals among over 460 diverse species. Committed to research, education and wildlife conservation, the zoo is actively involved in nearby 20 Species Survival Plans and proudly exhibits almost 40 threatened or endangered species. The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is one of only six major zoo/aquarium combinations in the country. Major natural habitats include: Asian Forest with leopards and tigers; Cheetah Valley with tall grasses and room for this agile cat that can run up to 70 miles per hour; Bear country with kodiak, black and spectacled bears; Tropical Forest Complex with a steamy indoor rainforest as home to 90 primates from all parts of the globe, from monkeys, to orangutans to gorillas and 150 different plant species from around the world; African Savanna with lions, zebras, giraffes, ostrich, rhinos, and elephants; and the PPG Aquarium featuring state-of-the-art exhibits, such as a crawl-through stingray tunnel, a two-story shark tank and unique revolving tanks, and an array of aquatic species including penguins, sharks, Pacific giant octopus, jellyfish, potbellied sea horses, electric eel, and live coral. There's also the Kids Kingdom, one of the nation's top children's zoos.
The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is open every day of the year except Christmas Day. There's a gift shop, several food facilities, and tram. The zoo is handicapped (wheelchair) accessible.
