Pikes Peak Mountain has been the center of attention in this region for thousands of years, drawing people from all over the world. In 1806, Zebulon Pike, a young lieutenant who was never able to ascend the great mountain bearing his name, gazed upon the 14,110 foot peak from over 100 miles away. In 1893, Katherine Lee Bates, a Massachusetts author and teacher, was so inspired by the view from atop Pikes Peak that she composed the lyrics to "America the Beautiful." Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region enjoy more than 300 days of sunshine annually, providing an excellent environment for outdoor adventures for enthusiasts of all ages and interests. Today, tourism, high-tech industry and the military are the driving forces for the economy of the region. Activities: Outdoor Activities include: white water rafting, Jeep tours, horseback riding, fishing, hot air ballooning, golf and bike tours. Take a scenic drive along Pikes Peak Highway where you'll also find plenty of places to pull over for breathtaking pictures, a picnic, or just walk around and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Take a ride to the top on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway or visit the colorful Garden of the Gods. Other attractions include Manitou Cliff Dwellings, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Seven Falls, U.S. Air Force Academy, and the Flying W Chuckwagon Supper & Western Show. Within an hour are: the Royal Gorge and Bridge, Florrisant Fossil Beds Nat'l Monument, and limited stakes gambling at the restored old gold mining town of Cripple Creek.
