A few days prior to reaching the site of present-day Peirre, South Dakota the expedition had seen large herds of buffalo grazing, as well as deer, elk and antelope. At the nearby Farm Island Recreation Area is a site where three Teton Sioux boys approached the Corps’ campsite on Sept. 23, 1804. Captains Lewis and Clark told the boys that they would like to meet with their chiefs. On Sept. 25, 1804, the captains hold council with three Teton chiefs at the mouth of the Teton River (now known as the Bad River) where it joins the Missouri across from the now site of Pierre at La Framboise Island. The meeting turns tense and may have become violent, if not for the action of Black Buffalo, one of the chiefs. Clark’s journal entry for the day includes this reference: "we discover our interpeter do not Speak the language well." At the Cultural Heritage Center north of the State Capitol, and built into the side of a Missouri River bluff in Pierre, the Oyate Tawicoh'an (Ways of the People) exhibit focuses on South Dakota's tribal heritage. You can learn about the religious, social and cultural practices of the Yankton and Teton Sioux, the Arikaras and other Plains Indian tribes. The exhibit includes an Arikara bullboat just like the one Clark had described in his journal on October 9, 1804. The expedition had spent several peaceful days at an Arikara village north of Pierre.
