The central section includes 70 miles of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the towns of Buxton and Hatteras. Once nicknamed the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" for its treacherous storms, currents and shoals, the Cape Hatteras area has much history regarding shipwrecks and lighthouses.

The Southern section includes the town of Ocracoke on Ocracoke Island and 40 miles of Cape Lookout National Seashore.

US Highway 17 connects Norfolk, Virginia to US 158 accessing the Outer Banks just North of Kitty Hawk, then connects to US Highways 64 and 264 South of Nags Head via Manteo and Roanoke Island, leading to Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina. State Highway 12 on the Banks, extends North past Duck and South to Ocracoke (via a ferry between Hatteras and Ocracoke Island). There's also ferry service between Ocracoke and US Highway 264 near Swanquarter on the mainland.
