The North Carolina Zoological Park, at 4401 Zoo Parkway, Ashboro, NC, is a place of wonderful discovery with over 500 acres in its African and North American continental regions. In area, it's the country's largest and finest walk-through, natural habitat zoo. The animals and plants in its exhibits are observed in settings that closely resemble the habitats in which they live in the wild. The zoo has about five miles of trails within its two continental regions. There are nearly 1,000 additional acres that can be used for future expansions and improvements. Among the Zoo's more popular animal attractions are its seals, sea lions, seabirds, polar bears, bison, elk, river otters, deer, alligators, rhinoceros, elephants, baboons, chimpanzees, gorillas, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, tropical birds and many others. There are also numerous indoor exhibits, including the Sonora Desert, the African Pavilion, the Forest Aviary and Streamside. You can enter the zoo at either the North American or Afican regions. Shuttle buses go between the two areas (seasonal). Stroller and wheelchair (some motorized) rentals are available and buses and trams can accommodate wheelchairs, however the terrain is hilly, some of it steep, and you cannot see the exhibits from the buses or trams. The zoo also has gift shops, restaurants, and refreshment stands. The zoo is open year-round (weather permitting) except Christmas day.
