Along the East River of New York City, Macy's, the world's largest store, sponsors the world's largest fireworks display. From approximately 9-9:30 PM on July 4, the skies are lit by some 20,000 shells and effects, launched from barges along the East River. These include some of the most amazing fireworks there are. The New York Fire Department also participates with fire boats shooting red, clear, and blue water 300 feet over the river. In the past, this has been preceded by flyovers of military aircraft.
Places from which to watch the spectacular show: Along the east side of Manhattan, the East River between 23rd St. and 42nd St., also from points on the other side of the East River in Brooklyn, or from high rises areas in Queens and Manhattan. Certain streets will be closed to traffic near the East River. If you want this close vantage point, you will need to arrive early by public transportation.
New York City, of course, offers multiple types and venues of other activities, entertainment, historic sites, etc. to complement a great Independence Day celebration.
