The annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City draws hundreds of thousands of participants and spectators. Dating back to 1762, this event is a parade of international fame and significance, in which Irish-Americans and Irish "wannabes" let their hair down.

Traditionally, Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated as a religious holiday in Ireland, but ironically, many Irish citizens travel across the ocean in order to experience the more festive American flavor of the Green Day celebration in New York. Whether you go to church, the parade, or a pub, or all three, St. Patty's Day is New York City's most exuberant annual celebration. New Yorkers go all out with the "Wearing of the Green" - clothes, green flowers, green hats, green hair, green bagels, green water fountains, green beer (of course), and even green lights on the Empire State Building.

The big parade, which will be held March 17, 2011, with 165,000 participants and a few hundred thousand spectators, marches up 5th Avenue, clan by clan, from 44th street starting at 11:00 AM on Saint Patrick's Day (unless it falls on a Sunday, then the parade is Saturday). And with Irish bar, pub and restaurant names such as, Barney Star, Dempsey's Pub, McSorley's Ale House, Muldoon's Irish Pub, Tir na Nog, Rocky Sullivan's, Paddy Reilly's Music Bar, O'Neill's, Clancy's, (and others) you can't go wrong for a good Irish place to party.
