By the 1830's there were 3 main sections of the city: the original French Quarter, the American sector, and Fauberg Marigny, just above Canal Street. The Garden District was established in the 1830's and 1840's. By 1852 the city grew up the river forming Lafayette. Also in the 1850's Jefferson City was formed. Across the river from the French Quarter, Algiers was expanded into a small city. The formation of all these small sectors of the city is what built New Orleans into what it is today.

Activities: Stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets of The French Quarter, have a Hurricane on Bourbon Street and discover Dixieland Jazz. Take a round-trip sightseeing tour on the St. Charles Avenue Streetcar and tour the Garden District with its graceful mansions and breathtakingly elegant homes. While riding the Streetcar, you'll be aboard a movable historic landmark as it is the oldest continuously operating street railway system in the world! Experience chance in the casinos, both river and land-based. See the ballet or the opera at one of New Orleans’ many theatres. And of course, the largest tourist event is Mardi Gras. This yearly celebration is always scheduled 47 days preceding Easter.
