The Smithsonian National Zoological Park is located in northwest Washington, DC. The National Zoo's most popular residents are the panda bears. The black and white giant pandas that normally live in temperate bamboo forests in China are probably the best recognized, but rarest, animals in the world. Most of the zoo's almost 3,100 animals and 435 species are exhibited throughout numerous habitat areas. About one-fifth of the zoo's species are endangered or threatened, including its famous pandas. The list of animals includes kangaroos, tigers, lions, zebras, lemur, monkeys, gibbons, giraffes, gorillas, orangutans, elephants, hippos, rhinos, wolves, cheetahs, sea lions, beaver, emus, pelicans, storks, flamingos, lorikeets, cockatoos, parrots, alligators, turtles, lizards, fish, eels, and a lot more.
For food there's the Mane Restaurant, Panda Express Grill, Panda Cafe (seasonal), and other snack stops, as well as gift shops. The zoo is handicapped and wheelchair accessible, however some of the terrain is hilly. Some wheelchairs and strollers are available. The National Zoo is open every day of the year except Christmas day and admission is FREE.
