Natchez takes its name from a tribe of Indians once settled here along the Mississippi River. The area's historical sites, parks, numerous cultural offerings and the lure of riverboat gambling, are all reasons why so many people are drawn here. There are over 500 pre Civil War buildings still standing with 9 homes available for touring. You can also visit the once rowdy and now touristy Natchez-Under-the-Hill district, the Grand Village of the Natchez, and the Natchez Trace Parkway that follows the route of an ancient trail from Natchez to Nashville. Some notable Natchez African Americans are Ibrahima, the famous enslaved African prince; Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, America's first black concert singer who was born into slavery on a Natchez plantation; Hiram R. Revels, the first African-American to sit in either house of the United States Congress; and Richard Wright, one of the most powerful literary voices of the twentieth century and was the son of Natchez share-croppers. Enormous fortunes were made from the area's natural resources, the land and the river and the exportation of cotton.
Various year-round festivals and celebrations bring arts and special events to town. While exploring history, be sure to partake in some of the finest Southern cuisine.
