Nicknamed the “elbow of sand,” Nantucket Island is one far away place right in the ocean of our backyard. For a century and a half Nantucket, off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, was the busiest and most prosperous whaling port in the world. The former whale harbor is surrounded by sparkling waters of Nantucket Sound to the north and gusty Atlantic waves to the south. Salty breezes sweep the island and pounding surf beats an anthem that Nantucket knows by heart. Experience the waters up close by chartering a boat for deep-sea fishing, sail boating or windsurfing. On land the attractions include historic museums, open houses, art galleries, guided tours of the island and biking excursions from one end of the island to the other.
There is ferry service to Nantucket. The Steamship Authority carries passengers, bikes, cars, and trucks year-round out of Hyannis. Hy-Line Cruises carries passengers and bikes on ferries from May through October and on a year-round high-speed catamaran. They travel from Hyannis to Nantucket and also do inter-island travel from Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard to Nantucket and back. Reservations for cars are recommended. There is also a small Nantucket Memorial Airport. The main town of Nantucket, as well as Siasconset, provide lodging on the island.
