Hernando de Soto, is most credited with the discovery of Mobile Bay in 1540, when he battled the chief, Tuskaloosa, and the Mobile Indians for supplies. The Spanish presence was sporadic and the French, under D'Iberville, established a settlement on the Mobile River. Despite Spain's attempts to claim the area, France prevailed and established Mobile as the capital of then French Louisiana and it soon became a port city. The 1763 Treaty of Paris gave Mobile to England who were later preoccupied by the American Revolution, and the Spanish took control for the next 30 years, establishing a Spanish infuence in architecture and culture. Trade flourished for a while, but the capital of the territory was moved to New Orleans and Mobile lost importance. After the Revolutionary War there were various English, Spanish, French, and United States claims for territory. Alabama became a U.S. state in 1819 and a major port city. The 'City by the Bay', Mobile, Alabama was well guarded during the Civil War and was the last major Confederate city to fall. Some years after the war, the harbor and entrance to the Bay were improved and dredged. Shipping increased the prosperity of the city.
Mobile has celebrated the country's first Mardi Gras, since 1704, during Lent. The city is headquarters for the America's Junior Miss Contest and has a symphony orchestra, opera, various museums, the retired World War II battleship, USS Alabama, and more. Activities: See historic antebellum homes, restored buildings, Fort Conde, Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center, Museum of Art, Medical Museum, Police Museum, Fire Museum, Botanical Gardens, USS Alabama. Ride the authentic Cotton Blossom Steamboat (on the National Register). Visit beautiful nearby Bellingrath Gardens where the Southern Belle steamboat offers fun and scenic 45-minute cruises on Fowl River, the 'River of Birds'.
