Near Missoula, Montana, the Expedition camped and bathed at Lolo Hot Springs on June 29, 1806. They had also stopped here on their route west. Near Missoula from what they called Travelers Rest, the party separated on July 3, 1806, for the return trip. Clark with 50 horses, 20 men, Sacagawea, headed up the Bitterroot River, crossed the Continental Divide and arrived at Camp Fortunate on July 8, where they recovered their dugouts and the supplies they had cached the year before. Nine men went down the Missouri with the dugouts while Clark and the rest of the party headed east along the Gallatin River on to explore the Yellowstone River. Lewis and nine men headed down the Bitterroot River and later split to explore the Marias River for one last look for a water route to the Pacific, but ended this at a place Lewis called Camp Disappointment.
The Clark Fork River runs through Missoula. The Lolo Trail and Lolo Pass Visitor Center, 3/4 hour south and west of Missoula on Highway 12, on the Montana-Idaho border, provides insights into the life of an expedition member and their experiences in this area. Lolo Hot Springs is 7 miles before the border. Also noteworthy, although not related to the Lewis and Clark trip, Missoula is home to the U.S. Department of Forestry’s Smoke Jumpers Center with exhibits to view.
