The Memphis Zoo in Memphis, Tennessee is situated on 70 acres and is considered one of the world’s first-class zoos, with 2,800 animals representing 400 species. The zoo has over 50 endangered species in its collection and has been successful in saving from extinction both the Pere David deer and the Przewalski horse through captive breeding. There is a diverse collection of many common animals including elephants and lions and uncommon animals like blind cave fish and binturongs. Some of the exhibit areas include the Primate Canyon, Animals of the Night, Once Upon A Farm, and Dragon’s Lair. Two new exhibits that have recently opened are China, an exhibit featuring giant pandas and other Asian animals; and the Northwest Passage, a naturalistic complex for marine mammals like polar bears, seals, sea lions and other species of the Pacific Northwest. If you get tired of walking, you can take a guided tour on the Zoo Tram.
Don’t forget to visit the wildest shop in town, the Elephant’s Trunk Zoo Shop which offers unique gifts for all ages. If you get hungry, check out the Cat House Café at the end of the Nile River or The Back Yard Dog House near the Farm for good food. There are also several concession stands throughout the park. The Memphis Zoo is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Three are wheelchair and stroller rentals available.
