History is shaped by momentous events that change our futures and by leaders who influence our destiny. Martin Luther King, Jr. was instrumental in helping a nation realize and rectify unspeakable flaws that were tarnishing the name of America. His selfless contributions to our history, places him in this inimitable position.
In 1980, the National Park Service designated the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site and Preservation District in Atlanta, Georgia. This district, in the neighborhood known as Sweet Auburn, includes: King's birth home, Ebenezer Baptist Church where King, Sr. and King, Jr. were both pastors, and many other historic places which preserve and commemorate the achievements of Dr. King and a vital community of Black families, churches, and other public institutions. Here the preservation of the district and the national historic site allows for a glimpse into the history of Black urban culture in the South and the backdrop for the Civil Rights Movement.
