One of the oldest zoological gardens in the country, the Lincoln Park Zoo, north of downtown Chicago, Illinois, draws over 3 million visitors a year. There are four different groups of exhibits at the zoo. In the Blue Trail you'll find penguins, seabird house, birds of prey, bear, wolf and large mammal habitats. The Gold Trail has primates, lions, sea lion and the children’s zoo. The Green Trail has apes, waterfowl, antelope and zebra. And finally the Red Trail has the interactive farm where kids can actually see what it’s like to feed the cows, churn the butter and more. Children can ride the colorful carousel made of artisan crafted wood replicas of rare and endangered species. You can also take a virtual safari ride or hop aboard the Choo Choo.
The Park Place Café is open all year, while Big Cats, Brauer, Landmark, and Elephant Cafés are seasonal. Stop at the gift shops and bring a little bit of the zoo home with you - there are gifts ranging from educational toys to clothes and jewelry. The Lincoln Park Zoo is handicapped accessible, wheelchairs are available. The zoo is open all year and admission is FREE.
