In 1931, gambling was legalized in Nevada and the basis for Las Vegas began. Construction on Hoover Dam brought in an influx of construction workers. The Valley continued to grow with World War II, and the defense industry wanting the isolated location, employed a significant number of residents. After the war tourism and entertainment took over as the largest employer. Today it is miles of neon lights and 24-hour casinos.

Downtown redevelopment brought about the 70 million dollar Fremont Street Experience - the world’s first pedestrian gambling mall. During the day it is a 9-story barrel shaped canopy extending 4 blocks, but at night there are light shows every hour with 2 million light bulbs and 540,000 watts of sound. South Las Vegas Boulevard, known as The Strip, has many large hotels and casinos with high stakes gambling and high-end accommodations and amenities, as well as more economical lodging and lower stakes gambling.

Las Vegas is famous for nightclubs and a large variety of entertainment shows to enjoy from big names like Don Rickles, Sheena Easton, Alan Jackson, Wayne Newton, Blue Man Group, Penn and Teller, the famous Las Vegas show girl shows like the Folies Bergere and Splash, plus a number of free entertainment sights. Las Vegas also offers family entertainment with amusement rides, M & M World, Museums and much more. Many restaurants are located throughout the city offering buffets and/or fine dining.
