Lanai, the "Private Island" at one time was also called the Pineapple Island, because of the large pineapple growing operations. Today, you only see the remains of great pineapple fields, but there are two great golf courses: The Experience at Koele at Lanai City and There is also a 9-hole Cavendish Public Golf Course at Lanai City. Rent a four'wheel drive and explore the island, see the old pineapple fields, the odd geological shapes at the Garden of the Gods, snorkel/swim/dive in the clear, clean waters of Manele Bay and Hulopo'e Beach.
The one main city, LANAI CITY, near the center of the island is small and quaint. This old plantation city hasn't changed much from the 1920's - it still has tin-roofed homes, old-fashioned stores, and a wooden jail.
There is one commuter airport, also ferry service, as well as day tour trips by boat and sailing and snorkeling trips, from Lahaina on Maui.
