Lake Tahoe on Northern California's border with Western Nevada, is a very popular destination for travelers from all over. At an elevation of 6,225 feet, it is one of the deepest, bluest, clearest, prettiest and coldest inland lakes in the U.S. and the world. The distance around the lake is 72 miles. The largest and most popular area of the lake is at South Lake Tahoe, CA across the border from Stateline, NV's casinos. There is lake access and snow skiing in this area at Heavenly Valley. Skiing is also available at Olympic Valley (Northwest of the Lake), Incline Village (Northeast), and Homewood (West). Crystal Bay on the North shore straddles the California and Nevada border and offers gambling (on a smaller scale) on the Nevada side. Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park offers more great scenery and protected areas on the Northeast part of the lake. The stage set for the TV series Bonanza is an attraction on the Northeast side. Historic Virgina City is 32 miles away to the Northeast.
