Kauai is the oldest of the six main tourist islands that comprise the Hawaiian chain. It lies 70 miles northwest of the main island of Oahu and Honolulu. The 33 by 25 mile Kauai contains a spectacular and widely varied landscape, from 3,500+ foot deep Waimea Canyon, the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific", to the Napali Coast with cliffs rising 3,000 feet, to over 40 white sand beaches. The lush vegetation on Hawaii's Kauai island gives it the nickname of "The Garden Isle". The abundant vegetation is on the leeward side of the island, because the rain is drained from the eastward moving clouds by the tall mountains. The west side of the island, where Waimea Canyon is located, is relatively dry, while the 5,100+ foot high Mt. Waileale in the center of the island is known as the "wettest spot in the world". Of course, all this rain creates the beauty of the waterfalls, greenery, crops, and flowers.
Captain Cook landed in Hawaii in 1778. Missionaries and sugar altered the face and future of Kauai. Missionary descendants became successful planters and the island was blanketed with green. The sugar industry brought people from Asia and Europe influencing Kauaiās history and cultural diversity. Tourism is Kauai's major industry today. More than 60 movies and full-length television features have been filmed here. Enjoy boat tours, helicopter tours, great beaches, water sports, surfing, fishing, horseback riding, hang gliding, biking, hiking, museums, gardens and cultural and crafts exhibits. This is a most romantic of all the islands - perfect for honeymooners.
