In southeast Alaska, from the beginning of Spring to the end of Fall, you'll find one of the world's greatest populations of humpback whales. About 600 humpback whales inhabit the waters of the northern Inside Passage. They migrate annually to Alaska to feed on the abundant plankton and small fish that thrive in this area. The other type of whale common to the area is the Orca, or killer whales. While humpbacks often travel alone, or in small groups, Orcas travel in large packs and although sightings are common, they don't stay in one place for long.
If you want to see what else Juneau, Alaska has to offer, visit the Mendenhall Glacier. It is the only drive-up road accessible glacier in the USA, or you can take a drive to the forests around Juneau where you will find both black and brown bears as well as an abundance of bald eagles.
