Any human culture is enmeshed with the natural environment from which it originates. Jean Lafitte National Historic Park, New Orleans is both an urban and wilderness park. It was established to preserve significant examples of the rich natural and cultural resources of Louisiana's Mississippi Delta region. The park illustrates the influences that the many cultures have had on this region's history and development and rather than interpret a single theme, the park encompasses units that interpret many diverse but ultimately related themes. There are actually several sites in the park, including Chalmette Battlefield and National Cemetery (six miles Southeast of New Orleans along the Mississippi River), site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans and national cemetary for war veterans.
The Park Headquarters is in New Orleans with the visitors' center at 419 Decatur St. in the historic French Quarter.
