The first thing that you'll notice when you visit the Indianapolis Zoo are the biome’s, living habitats for clusters or groups of animals that closely replicate their natural habitat as much as possible. There are five different biome’s that you can visit; the Waters Biome consisting of three different types of water, contains dolphins, marine birds, amphibians, walrus, seals, sea lions, polar bears and other marine animals; the Deserts Biome, which contains some of the rarest desert reptiles; the Plains Biome is a slice of Africa where giraffes, elephants, zebras and kudu’s run wild; the Forests Biome is a replica of the tropical forests and contains forest-dwelling animals; the Encounters Biome houses ponies, pygmy goats and other animals with which visitors can interact. The zoo has approximately 3,800 specimens of 320 species of animals including 16 endangered species and 4 threatened species. There are also more than 1,900 species of plants throughout the grounds. And there are several rides and animal shows for your enjoyment (seasonal).
The Indianapolis Zoo is located at 1200 West Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana and is open year-round. There's a gift shop and several eating facilities. Strollers, wheelchairs, and electric cart rentals are available.
