Independence, Missouri was a staging and outfitting center for the Santa Fe Trail beginning in 1821; later the town became the last contact that overlanders had with civilization as they headed west on the Oregon Trail and for the 49'ers on the California Trail. These settlers arrived by steamboat from Saint Louis, then purchased goods at the trading posts and headed West in covered wagons called prairie schooners. From 1843 to 1869, over 350,000 overlanders made the extremely difficult journey West to find unlimited opportunities, rich farmlands, gold, and a new life. The pioneers knew travel would be safer if they traveled in groups, so they would meet at Independence Square to organize their wagon trains to begin their long journey, often not knowing their exact destination until they reached it. In more recent history Independence was the home of Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the United States. The National Park Service maintains the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site.
Independence is a suburb on the East edge of Kansas City, Missouri. Activities: Harry S. Truman Home, Library and Museum; early Mormon Church and history; historic Independence Square; historic homes; the National Frontier Trails Center; and every Labor Day weekend the Santa-Cali Gon Days Festival with country and blue grass music, food and family entertainment. Nearby are the Kansas City pro teams of the Chiefs Football and the Royals Baseball.
