The Houston Zoological Gardens is located in Hermann Park, Houston, Texas. Starting out with one bison named Earl in 1920, this zoo has come a long way. Today, located on 55 lush tropical acres with more than 3,500 animals and over 700 species, the Houston Zoological Gardens is educational, as well as beautiful, and is the most attended zoo in Texas and the Southwest with 1 1/2 million guests each year. Featured exhibits include: spectacled bears from South America; the giant eland from Africa, world's largest antelope (up to 1,200 lbs); African okapis, a relative of the giraffe; lovable Australian koalas; and the Wortham World of Primates offering close viewing of many species of this fascinating and intelligent creature. You can also see giraffes, lions, tigers, rhinos, zebras, gazelle, elephants, lions, exotic birds, fish, reptiles, and many more. There's also the John P. McGovern Childrens' Zoo with hands-on activities and close "inside" viewing of a prairie dog habitat and a bat cave.
Don’t forget to bring home a souvenir of the Houston Zoo from the gift shop. Food concessions, vending machines and benches are there when you need a break, or bring your own lunch and have a picnic. The zoo is open all year. There are stroller and wheelchair rentals available.
