Volcanos are monuments to earth's origin, evidence that its primordial forces are still at work. During a volcanic eruption, we are reminded that our planet is an ever-changing environment whose basic processes are beyond human control. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution. The altitude in the park ranges from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, 13,677 foot Mauna Loa. Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, invites insight on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands while offering views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. View active steam vents and hot spots from the park loop road and actual lava flows (when safe) from a hiking trail.
Located on the Big Island of Hawaii, approximately 1/2 hour Southwest of Hilo. State Route 11 between Hilo and Kailua Kona bisects this year-round park. Activities: Nature Walks, Hiking, Mountain Climbing, Backcountry Fishing, Art Center and Museum.
